• Use fertilizers sparingly! Leave grass clippings and mowed leaves on your lawn as an alternate nutrient to fertilizer. If a fertilizer is necessary, choose an organic, phosphorous free, slow-release product and do not over apply.
• Compost on site, bag for collection, or take to community compost program. Compost contains all the nutrients that fertilizers do and more. Contact your Solid Waste District or local municipality.
• Avoid placing grass clippings or yard waste near stream banks as they can smother the natural vegetation that keeps stream banks from eroding.
• Use a broom rather than a hose to clean up grass clippings and dirt. Rake organic matter out of street and gutter.
